Of all the beautiful pastries in the Bay — and there are a fair few in this croissant-obsessed town — it’s worth crossing the bridge for a pickup at Tarts de Feybesse. Fine dining power couple Monique and Paul Feybesse’s new brick-and-mortar patisserie in Oakland is a simple, modern storefront packed with grab-and-go, sweet, and savory baked goods prepared via traditional European techniques.
In addition to mesmerizing spiral tarts, which went viral during the pandemic, its cases display items such as an apple rose tart arranged like petals, trompe l’oeil cakes masquerading as lemons, pain suisse with the cut edges flipped up, and extra-long financiers and eclairs with glossy glazes. There’s also savory, like the ugly delicious boeuf bourguignon, a bone-satisfying comfort on cold nights. Lines out its door on the ground floor of (new luxury apartment building) the Vespr are the norm, but oh so very worth it. –Becky Duffett
