Berkeley cool-kid tastemakers Devin McDonald (the son of famous local musician Country Joe McDonald) and partner Jenny Stevenson operate a pair of North Berkeley’s most important actual-kid destinations: Mr. Mopps’ Children’s Toys and Mr. Mopps’ Children’s Books. The shops have separate entrances and vibes, but are linked inside by a simple, arched, connecting doorway.
Mr. Mopps’ Children’s Toys is Berkeley’s oldest, most imaginative independent toy shop, a large, funky space from the early 1960s literally shimmering with updated treasure, from specialty finds from international toymakers (Maileg, Jellycat, Djeco, Loog guitars), to buildable marvels that challenge kid engineers and scientists, to pocket-money-worthy bouncy balls and figurines.
Through the portal, the newer two-tier library-esque Children’s Books features new, eclectic titles from board books to young adult novels, chosen for their beauty, originality, diversity, and importance. Gorgeous gift wrap is available.
Outside, street artist Fairing Purth’s vibrant new mural — a reflection on determined motherhood — gestures toward the multi-generational experience that awaits inside. –Joanna Della Penna
