Contrary to the national chatter around SF’s downtown, pockets of the retail district are thriving. In Jackson Square, for example, a glossy new Polo Ralph Lauren boutique just opened in a charming 19th-century building, joining a collection of brands rushing to, not from, the city.
Since March, the store has engaged in a brisk trade in the full rainbow of Polo shirts for men and women, denim basics, Oxford and chambray shirts, swimwear, and — perhaps in a nod to SF’s downtown uniform — vests. More interestingly, the store offers a small selection of vintage apparel, antiques, and accessories such as watches and leather jackets. There’s a retro vibe throughout, with nautical-themed Double RL short-sleeved shirts and drawstring pants, and indigo-cloth, pinstriped overalls and jackets — all perfect outfitting for the next boom cycle. –Jay Barmann
